PLA (polylactic acid) is a plant-based plastic often seen as an eco‑friendly alternative to traditional petroleum plastics. But is it truly biodegradable? The answer depends on how it’s disposed of.
What is PLA?
PLA is an artificial polymer first created in 1932. It’s made from lactic acid, which comes from biomass sugars – usually corn starch. This has led to concerns about competing with food crops.

Where is PLA used?
3D printing – Great for beginners, but products warp above 50°C.
Medical devices – Sutures and bone fixation implants that dissolve in the body.
Food packaging – Salad boxes, egg cartons, meat trays.
Cold drink cups – Used by McDonald’s and Starbucks for cold beverages.
Mulching films – Help soil temperature and humidity, then decompose.
So, is it biodegradable?
Yes – but only under specific conditions.
If PLA ends up in a normal outdoor environment, it can take several decades to break down, similar to regular plastic. To degrade quickly, PLA needs an industrial composting facility with:
Temperatures above 50°C
Controlled humidity and oxygen

Without that environment, PLA behaves like ordinary plastic. Always look for compostability marks (e.g., BPI) and check if your local waste facility accepts PLA.
Better alternatives to PLA
|
Material |
Key advantage |
|
Bagasse (sugarcane fibre) |
Breaks down in home compost, resists hot liquids |
|
Seaweed-based PHA |
Decomposes at room temperature, withstands up to 80°C |
|
Untreated paper |
Naturally compostable, but not waterproof |
Bottom line
PLA is a well‑intentioned material, but its green credentials only work if you have access to industrial composting. If not, treat it like normal plastic – or choose alternatives like bagasse or paper.
Reduce single‑use items first. The most sustainable option is always to use less.
